Christ the Saviour Parish was established in 1962. The Late Fr George Gladky was its founding Pastor. Services were held on the property of an old Methodist Church purchased at 1180 NW 99th St. The Parish was renamed the Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Saviour when the Diocese of the South was created in August 1978.
Under the leadership of Fr George, the parish was involved with missionary activity, helping to start Missions in several parts of Florida and the southeastern United States.
In the early 1980s, new property was purchased in Miami Lakes. The old 99th St property was sold in October 1993, and the first phase of our building project was completed, moving in on July 14, 1994. The second phase - construction of a permanent Cathedral - began in earnest in the summer of 2005, and we moved into our new Cathedral in October 2006. Our temporary Church became our Social Hall and was named the Charles Stoyka, Jr. Memorial Center in May 2007.

2007 marked the first complete year in our new Cathedral. We watched our Cathedral nave undergo additional construction - scaffolding for the iconography for our dome and apse behind the altar. Our new iconostasis arrived from Greece and was installed. All of this was accomplished by the closure of 2007. Such a wonderful beginning for 2008! In May 2007 our parish hall was renamed the Charles Stoyka, Jr. Memorial Center to memorialize this man whom God, in his divine providence and care for us, brought into our midst to help us complete our cathedral building project, as well as to make a good beginning to the cathedral's interior beautifications. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the Hall and is displayed outside of Fr Philip's office.

We moved into our new Cathedral on Saturday, October 28, 2006! His Eminence Archbishop Dmitri, Archbishop of Dallas and the South, was present for our celebration and blessed the interior of the Cathedral, with Fr Philip, our Rector, and local clergy assisting. The heavens also blessed us with a morning 'shower' as the Blessing and Ribbon-cutting began. His Eminence Archbishop Dmitri celebrated a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. Concelebrants included Fr Philip, and area clergy. A Banquet in our Social Hall followed after the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy. Please click on the link and view photographs of the celebration!

We began construction of our new Cathedral in January 2005 and moved in on Saturday, October 28, 2006!
The Construction Updates Page memoralizes the process we experienced with the Cathedral from its roots (literally!), concrete foundation, cupola and finishing touches.
Please consider contributing your photographs of this process to the webmaster for inclusion here.

As with all construction projects, there is a begining.
The right photograph depicts construction of what would serve as our Temporary Church, and later Stoyka Center. Imagine the photographer was standing about where our Cathedral is now located!
The center photograph depicts the entrance to the Church offices within the Stoyka Center.
And of course, no church is complete without a sign - the left photograph.

During this time, worshipping in our temporary church at NW 77th Court included many notable events. In 2002, Patriarch Alexii II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, visited Christ the Saviour Cathedral. By 2004, we had Readers tonsured, Subdeacons ordained, and also an ordination to the Holy Priesthood.
This is not to forget the many baptisms, blessings, weddings, memorials and occasional funerals that took place in our temporary church.
